Turmeric Nimbu Pani (Lemonade)

Shuchi Naidoo July 27, 2016

"Refreshingly yellow, with properties great

Cools your nerves, and provides the shade,

Drips of chill, that soak that throat

Parched and burnt, it wins your vote,

Make a jug full, sip all day

A crowd pleaser, keeping infection at bay!"

Summer is all about cool drinks. From bubbles to lemonades, everyone brings out their A game to create their own versions of the best thirst-quenching, throat soothing, ice crackling jugs of flavour. Summer is also about outdoor activities, public spaces, and germs. Lots of germs. So for this recipe, I decided to fuse the ever popular Indian Nimbu Pani (sweet & salty lemonade) with a touch of health. After all, what could be better than having your lemonade and drinking immunity too ;)

Ingredients

Juice of 2 large lemons

Juice from 2 teaspoons of fresh ginger (optional)

4 glasses of water

4 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon honey

1-1.5 teaspoons rock salt (kala namak)

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

Ice & mint/cilantro leaves to serve

Raspberries/Blueberries to serve

Mix all the ingredients together in a jug till the sugar and honey is completely dissolved. Adjust sweetness/salt as per liking. Serve chilled over ice with fresh fruits for a burst of colour and flavour.

A great refreshing summer drink that not only quenches thirst, but also provides anti-inflammatory immunity against all those icky summer germs!
